Department of Defense: Data Integration
summer 2019
Our team collaborated closely with data scientists, development specialists and design strategists to deliver key insights and a usable prototype to sell work for a data lake.
roles + responsibilities
As Service and Visual Designer, I worked closely with our Business, Service and User Experience Designers to curate client facing workshops and stakeholder interviews to drive insights. Our team’s findings were then visually communicated through print and digital means, successfully contributing to the win of an RFP worth $150M+ for future work.
PROJECT overview: the client + audience
Our client was challenged in providing accurate data integral to team members who need it in a timely and secure manner. As a result, analysts had difficulties in displaying accurate reports to gain insights crucial to the success of their organization. With three previous attempts at implementing a single source of truth data lake to help resolve the issue, Accenture was brought on to revisit the system.
DESIGN challenge
Our team was tasked the redesign and consolidation of the agency’s data governance process by leveraging Amazon AWS to simultaneously collect and distribute accurate data to users across the enterprise.
our approach
Our cross-disciplinary team divided into three work streams made up of developers, data scientists and design strategists, balancing research and implementation efforts. Part of the design strategy team, we worked closely together to research current state, conduct stakeholder interviews and facilitate a two day workshop with key subject matter experts, where we were able to synthesize key findings and outputs. From this, I led the visual design work to communicate our findings in a way that helped our clients understand the why behind our approach and proposed path forward.
CO-creation + user feedback
Our team conducted 20+ stakeholder interviews, three client-facing working sessions, and one two-day workshop to gather key insights that paved the way for conclusive findings. We worked alongside our client team every step of the way to ensure that we were transparent with our findings and understanding the complexities of the organization.
Print artifacts
Leading synthesis efforts, our team digitally captured activities and synthesized insights within three days to produce future state artifacts presented to the client and key stakeholders. I worked closely with our data scientists and development strategists to design artifacts that communicated the findings in a way that spoke to not only our client, but our Studio at large. These artifacts have since been used to up-sell work and incorporate our rapid prototyping and data science crafts into other integrated projects.
digital product design
Directing the visual language of the final prototype, I collaborated with our user experience designers and development strategists to design a prototype that serves as both a data governance and data visualization tool. Our team successfully designed a modern process of reviewing datasets for data managers and stewards. We reduced the number of legacy systems to handle the data governance and approval process into one streamline user experience.
